McDonald is Western's Athlete of the Year

In college football, the National Football Coaches Association Division III All-America Team is widely recognized as the pinnacle of football All-America team. There isn’t a Second, Third or Honorable Mention category… Since 1945 the NFCA has recognized the top players nationally and since 1965 if you were not one of the top 11 offensive or defensive players in the United States, you weren’t a true All-American.

47 years later, Tom McDonald deservingly so, became ...<< MORE >>

Just When I Thought the Softball Field Was Safe...

... a bigger target is put on my back.

I thought I dodged a bullet tonight, pitching in New Canaan for Fieldtesters, because former New Canaan all-everything football player Chris Silvestri was not in the line-up for Lamakers. He was nowhere to be found, but their hitters crushed the ball further than ever, and I was just nowhere near the plate.

Then it got worse when I realized two of those players — Steve Benko ...<< MORE >>

The FCIAC Football Blog: An All-American Blog

Just a quick note: I was checking out Google Analytics, and was shocked as all heck to find out that between March 31 and April 30 (my 39th birthday), the FCIAC Football Blog had visitors from all 50 states! Not bad for a blog dedicated (technically) to high school football in a 19-team league in Fairfield County, CT!

Why all the attention? Part of that can be attributed to Kathy Lee Gifford's return to The Today ...<< MORE >>

McCloskey Named Ludlowe's Head Coach

And the FCIAC Football Blog is left out of the loop... Same canned release was sent to the Connecticut Post and Fairfield Citizen-News. Sean Patrick Bowley's expanded piece can be found at FCIAC.net. I was chasing the other finalist unfortunately, and should have asked Ludlowe athletic director Dave Schulz if an announcement was coming when I saw him Saturday... Not that there would have been an answer ready, sounds like the offer was accepted ...<< MORE >>

Vikings Select Sullivan

The Minnesota Vikings have selected John Sullivan in the sixth round of the NFL draft. More news and analysis can be found at LocalSportsFeed.com.

John Sullivan is a Viking!

John Sullivan, one of the best players in Greenwich High School football history (along with Ken Bell and some guy named Steve Young and others) has made the big leap into the NFL.  A two-way lineman who dominated the FCIAC and the state of Connecticut, Big John was drafted today by the Minnesota Vikings in the sixth round - the 187th overall pick.

Analysis can be harsh, and the word on Sullivan was not the praise that one might have expected when he left Greenwich for Notre Dame following the 2002 season.  Coming into the draft, NFL.com said:

"Sullivan has short arms, which is not ideal for a center, and he may lack some toughness, but he has smarts and is adept at knowing the offense. He was the leader of a Notre Dame offensive line that struggled mightily and he needs to show more tenacity."

To me, there's no doubting his smarts.  Having called every single one of his games from 2000 to 2002, I got to know John and his family a little, and they're quality people.  John joined me on WGCH on Thanksgiving Day in 2002 for a quarter and he was fun to talk with.

I'm no draft guru, but I've always thought that if he came out of school following his junior season, he would have been a high second round pick.  John showed tremendous durability, starting 31 straight games until a knee sprain put him on the sideline in 2007.  Of course the Irish also had, shall we say, a rather disappointing year in '07 - and that's putting it mildly.  Those factors saw Sullivan's stock fall.

So congratulations to John Sullivan.  All of Greenwich takes pride in seeing a good guy make it to the NFL, though I don't think anybody is surprised.

Staples to Play Massachusetts Powerhouse

While conducting an interview for a LocalSportsFeed article about Staples two-sport star Mike Samela, Wreckers head coach Marce Petroccio confirmed that his team will travel to Massachusetts for a showdown with North Andover High School.

The game will be played during the Wreckers' bye week, which is Week 6 of the season. Last season, the Wreckers elected to keep a bye week because a suitable opponent could not be found.

The Scarlet Knights were 7-4 ...<< MORE >>

Sullivan's Draft Date Four Days Away

Former Greenwich All-American John Sullivan will hear his name called on the first day of the NFL Draft on Saturday. The question of course is this: Which team will invest in the Notre Dame center's future?

Back on the Field

I played my first softball game of the season last night. Ordinarily that would be no big deal, just another sign of spring. And in my case, another reminder of how unathletic I am, and how old I'm getting.

But the game was played two days before I could officially say, "I had cervical fusion surgery done five months ago."

The expected recovery time was six full months. Use of a bone growth stimulation device helped the fusion take, I haven't tried to lift for bulk at the gym (light weight is fine), and I'm feeling great ...<< MORE >>

Bunnell Football: Lord of the Rings

I saw two vital pieces to Bunnell's second-straight CIAC Class L and SWC championships on Saturday.

At Planet Fitness in Trumbull, I forgot to ask quarterback Chris Sloat if the team got its championship rings yet. But later at the JCC Schoolboy Classic in Bridgeport, head coach Craig Bruno was proudly wearing his.

Central Pair Heading to Muhlenberg

A question left unanswered at the Central football banquet was this: Where is Kenny Cobb heading to college? There was word he would that the All-State lineman would end up at Fordham on a football scholarship. Instead, he and Central teammate Victor Taiwo are heading to Allentown, PA, to play play for Division III powerhouse Muhlenberg.

Cobb answered the question for me last night at the scholar-athlete dinner, and seems to be very happy with his ...<< MORE >>

Marinelli to Coach Fairfield County All-Stars

The Continental Manor in Norwalk came alive tonight. Though the highlight of the evening was the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame Ralph DeSantis/Fairfield County Chapter's scholar athlete awards, New Canaan head coach Lou Marinelli was announced as the head coach of this year's Fairfield County all-star team.

So if New Haven is finally going to be beaten, this could be the year.

And if you played this year as a senior, you don't ...<< MORE >>

Day Job and Night Job Meet

I try and separate my day job from the FCIAC Football Blog. But this weekend I was swamped and in a bind with day job stuff (and working on the second generation of the FCIAC Football Blog... trust me, if I do it right, this thing is going to be big...).

So for my job as a senior writer at Multichannel Merchant, I included not only something that related to my lack of a high school ...<< MORE >>

On Second Thought... No April Fools' Joke Here

I could pull off an April Fools' hoax on this site, but it just doesn't seem right. When I was in college and we had an annual April Fools' lampoon of our college newspaper, we could get away with that kind of stuff. And at times we were nasty about what we wrote.

But now we're in an even more political correct era. And with this being a local forum, even something meant to be a ...<< MORE >>

Ice Hockey Injury Secrets Revealed

Something I forgot to write about after the CIAC ice hockey championships: Players go out on the ice with injuries, and no one suspects a thing. Thanks to locker rooms and equipment, a player can have a major injury and skate without anyone knowing it.

And usually after the last game of the season, the coach will matter-of-factly talk about how injuries came into play.

I only talked to Fairfield head coach Adolph Brink and Fairfield Prep's ...<< MORE >>

New Lacrosse Beginning in New Canaan

It appears to be business as usual on New Canaan's lacrosse fields. Alex Whitten has taken over the program, and alumni attempts reinstate longtime head coach Howard Benedict seem to have silently died.

Just before the official start of the spring season started, Benedict was denied a court injunction to have Whitten's hiring overturned, and will now have a hearing in court on April 21. As you can see here in the court ...<< MORE >>

It's On: Pamby Motors Strongest Man Competition

And when you read the description of the events, it's safe to say that I was over reacting (and probably causing a lot of people some panic). It does look to me like football training and the events described go hand in hand. Even the truck pull seems a little safer (and I'm guessing a Dodge Ram will be involved). Here's the full competition packet.

The winning team receive a $1,000 grand prize, which ...<< MORE >>
