Before We Start Thinking FCIAC East vs. West Again…

Champs Sports

By Tim Parry

OK, if there’s anything we’ve learned about high school football playoffs, it’s that nothing is perfect.

Yes, the FCIAC’s playoff point system almost unraveled with the whole Week 5 communication breakdown (I refuse to call it a “scheduling fiasco”). They go with a point system similar to the CIAC’s because not every team plays an even number of games.

But it might be better than the East-West division champ vs. division champ alternative.

Look at the NVL. Brass Division champ Ansonia defeated Copper Division champ Kennedy pretty handily, 42-14, last night. Ansonia was ranked No. 1 in the state polls most of this season, Kennedy is .500 overall. Of the six teams in the Brass Division, five – Ansonia, Seymour, Crosby, Wolcott and Watertown – have better overall records.

The SWC has its divisions, and surprise: Joel Barlow is a division champion. They are also 5-5, and the eighth-best team in the league record-wise. The SWC went simple: Two teams with the best records play for the title.

Right now in the FCIAC: Darien-New Canaan winner is the league champ AND the East champ. If Norwalk wins on Thanksgiving, it is the Central champ. Greenwich, even with a loss to Staples, wins the West champ.

Then again, that’s according to the CIAC website. I haven’t broken this down by hand. But I’m pretty sure no one played within their divisions in Week 5.
