Matt Kelly: 2009 Player of the Year Candidate

Matt Kelly electrified Staples both on offense and special teams.

Kelly, a first-year starter at running back, had 1,232 yards and 16 touchdowns and helped lead the Wreckers to an FCIAC championship and the CIAC Class LL title game.

On special teams, Kelly gave Staples many momentum shifts. He had an average of 21.5 yards on 21 punt returns, including one for a 70-yard touchdown. Kelly also returned 11 kickoffs for an average of 27 yards.

Kelly stood out of defense, too. A second-year started at corner, Kelly picked off one pass, defended 7 passes and had 34 tackles.
