Trumbull Could Be Loaded in 2009

Could this be the Year of Trumbull in the FCIAC? Everyone but head coach Bob Maffei will tell you his team, which opens tonight at Wilton, is a favorite to win the FCIAC Championship.

Yes they won a prestigious 7-on-7 tournament at New Canaan in the summer, but even Maffei knows it’s not a harbinger for the season. He reminded me last month that the 7-on-7 tournaments are played in your “underwear,” meaning not in pads, and that real football isn’t played in your underwear.

Maffei has half of last season’s starters returning, and eight juniors cracked the starting lineup. What’s more, Trumbull will have a rotation of players on the defensive line and just a few linemen going both ways.

And with multi-skilled players like Jeff John and Mike Romano in the backfield, defenses may have to expect the unexpected.

It’s a talented, experienced group, so who knows: Maybe this is Trumbull’s year? What do you think?
