Turns out there was a fantastic finish in the Norwalk-Brien McMahon game on Thanksgiving at Casagrande Field. I ran into Norwalk athletic director Wayne Mones last night, and he described what happened.
If you haven’t heard the story, here it is:
Late in the game, up 13-6, Norwalk went into victory formation and took a knee on first, second and third down. Instead of punting on fourth down (the Bears did have a snap go over punter Danny Diaz’s head earlier in the game), head coach Pete Tucci had quarterback Andrew Krasnavage take a knee at the Norwalk 30 yard line.
On the next play, McMahon quarterback Damien Vega hit tight end Chris Daniel for a touchdown. A two-point conversion pass from Chris Jerome to Clement Abonyi gave the Senators the 14-13 win.

Raise your hand if you honestly believed McMahon would be 2-1 three games into the season. Okay, maybe there are more hands raised than I thought. But the truth is, this sophomore-heavy team is playing like a bunch of veterans.
I covered McMahon’s opener against Danbury, and head coach Joe Santa Lucia reminded me after the loss that half of his kids were used to playing in front of a handful of parents in a low-pressure situation.
Against Stamford, sophomore quarterback Damien Vega was leading the McMahon offense toward an end zone that was filled with police cars that responded to a fight in the statds at Jack Cassagrande Field. The strobe lights from the six cars did not make sophomores like Vega and Chris Jerome miss a beat.
That’s something to think about as McMahon gets deeper into its schedule. Yes, they may have a lot of kids who aren’t old enough to drive yet, but they’ve also gelled into a focused unit rather quickly.
