New Canaan, the state’s top-ranked team to end the 2008 season, has swept BlueStreak Sports Training’s postseason awards, presented by the FCIAC Football Blog.
Local coaches selected Lou Marinelli as the BlueStreak Sports Training Fairfield County Coach of the Year.
The Rams finished the season 13-0, its first undefeated seasons since Joe Sikorski led New Canaan to back-to-back 10-0 seasons in 1968 and 1969. New Canaan returned all but three starters from last season’s team, which won its second-straight state title.
The Rams won the FCIAC and CIAC Class MM championships, and finished first in the Bill Gonillo Five, New Haven Register and The Day of New London polls.
New Canaan quarterback Nate Quinn is the BlueStreak Sports Training Fairfield County Offensive Player of the Year.
Quinn, a first year starter who replaced 2007 BlueStreak Sports Training Fairfield County Offensive Player of the Year Charlie Westfal under center, threw for 2,571 yards and completed 57% of his passes. He threw 26 touchdown passes, rushed for seven, and also led the Rams with 599 rushing yards.
New Canaan defensive end Nick DiRubio is the BlueStreak Sports Training Fairfield County Defensive Player of the Year.
DiRubio, one of three returning sterters from the 2007 New Canaan team that won the Class MM title, led the Rams with 10 sacks, and had 125 total tackles. He also had a fumble recovery and an interception.
Those who were selected as a BlueStreak Sports Training Fairfield County Player of the Week during the 2008 season received a spot on the primate ballot, alongside players nominated by coaches and through a fan poll.
Members of the local media then selected candidates for ofensive and a defensive player of the year from that list, and the top vote-recipients were then send back to the media for a final poll.
